Re: Session Five - Assignment One Question

"A good database design is, therefore, one that:

* Divides your information into subject-based tables to reduce redundant data.

* Provides the database management system (e.g. ACCESS) with the information it requires to join the information in the tables together as needed.

* Helps support and ensure the accuracy and integrity of your information.

* Accommodates your data processing and reporting needs."

(Reference: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/access/HA012242471033.aspx?pid=CH100645691033#Good)

Think of the small database we used in our lab exercise - Products and Suppliers. Briefly describe how this database observes any two of the four design principles outlined above.

1) * Accommodates your data processing and reporting needs.

The database can provide the reports in different categories between two databases. It can sort by the top 5 of Product or best salesman......etc. It helps the business to do better decision in a short period as the data a general provided in an accuracy and integrity way. It is convenience and improve performance for the business.

2) * Divides your information into subject-based tables to reduce redundant data.

In the last lesson, we used small database (Products and Suppliers) in our lab exercise. And we can find that the database can reduce redundant data as it can auto-carify is the data are re-entry data or not. Thus the data will not be duplicated. It is more efficiency and it make the data more accuracy and integrity. We also save time to double check and avoid human mistake/ typing mistake.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last but not least, a good database design is worth of using. Because the right method can make our business a breeze, the wrong method can make our business a chore.

Re: Session 4 - Assignment One Question

Find one example of Internet marketing that you think is particularly effective and one example that is ineffective. Explain your reasons, for example, you can describe how well the effective example takes advantage of the Internet's properties (e.g. interactivity, personalization, greater hold on user's interest). For the ineffective ad, you may describe how you can improve on it.

NOTE: You are free to use your own examples, or any of the examples I shared with you in class or in the class blog.

As we know, Internet marketing is using digital technologies to help sell your goods or services. I want to share my opinion on 2 very popular Fashion brands in Hong Kong (non-local) in the recently year:

*Effective - H&M

I think everyone in Hong Kong know about H&M very well. How can they expand in Hong Kong for only launched 2 years? I think internet marketing helps a lot.

They invite artists/ organizations to design some cloths as a crossover with their brand and launch to the fashion market. It can personalize their brand.

H&M is a world trade company so that its website have different language can be choose for, it is a kind of online community. Company can be searched by internet in 24 hours around the world. The website will auto count the visit track for H&M too.

In the website, customer can search the top 5 hot items in H&M almong Hong Kong. Their have their own catalogue with the price, size in details updated in there. We can find that they are not only updating their products, but also provide a customer services area to get the complaint/comment from the buyers. It can get a long-term relationship with the customers and improve their product marketing.

When the seasonal changes, we can find H&M's advertising is shown in Yahoo headlines/ full pages of the newspaper all the time. Moreover, H&M is sponsoring Olympia, the London International Horse Show 2009 as a brand-building. It can develop their company to be more famous in different field although the sponsorship is not offering in Hong Kong.

That's the reasons why i think H&M is an effective brand by using information marketing.

*Ineffective - Cutton on

On the other hand, cutton on is an Aus brand which launch in Hong Kong last year. And it runs 1 year without a website/ advertising/ promotion in Hong Kong. And it is an ineffective example for using information marketing.

Although Cutton on have their website in Aus, it is useless in Hong Kong. This is because the products and information is not updated/fit to Hong Kong. And here are some suggestions that they may get a better profit by using internet marketing:

1) First of all, building a local website for people know more about them. They can start it by writting a offical blog, to show what is the updated product of their shop every week, how to dress up as the simple model shown in the display, etc.

2) They can creat/ join some social network group, each as facebook and twitter.

3) They can post some video/ advertising in the free online broadcast(You tube) to get more attention.

4) They also can try to get office/ online commuications with customer by using VIP programme. For example, customer who bought over $1000 can become the member and get 10% off on the normal items. *Once they apply the membership, we can get their personal information (like e-mail) to send the promotion data to them next time.

5) They can offer some sponsor to the local activities to have the brand-building. Just like adidas, I think Cutton on also can sponsor their clothes to some of the organization.

Re: Session 3- Assignment One Question

This week we talked about Customer Relationship Management (CRM) as a process and as a software application. Based on the CRM concepts learned, answer the following questions:

List the customer data elements generated when a customer interacts with an airline by (a) making a reservation, (b) using frequent flyer miles, and (c) completing a flight. How does information from CRM improve these interactions?

Cathay Pacific - a famous airline companies in Hong Kong. Click Here to visit their website.

The following customer data are generated when a customer interacts with an airline:
  • Personal information (name, address, age, nationality, phone number, e-mail)
  • Departure and return date
  • Destination
  • one way or two ways return
  • Number of passengers
  • Type of class
  • Membership data (Asian Miles number, User name)
  • Meal preference
  • Payment method (credit card, cash, e-payment)

CRM software provides a lot of information for both customers and companies. It helps companies understand customers’ wants, thus to improve their servicing. Moreover, customers’ satisfaction also helps in marketing planning and the future policies.

What are the benefits of integrating the sales, marketing and customer support function using a single software package and a centralized database?

- Company no need to hire more people to handle the customer’s request, it can reduce the cost.

- A 24 hours online reservation can increase the sales revenue of the company and satisfaction of the customers.

- Customers do not need to re-entry their personal data every time, it helps to speed up transactions. Even for check in, retrieved for baggage is more convenient and effective to customers.

- Airlines are sending promotion to all the registered customers by e-mail, it can attract and enhance the long-term customer relationship.

- Company can control and monitor it more efficiency as CRM system shows all the previous customer interactions, it helps to solve customer’s problems more quickly.

Re: Session 2- Assignment One Question

Visit the SAP Small Business web site.

Scroll down the page and click the "View the Demo" link under the "Inventory and Operations" section. The demo will launch within your web browser. There are 4 tracks in the video. You only need to view Track 1: Introduction and Track 2: Automate the Order-to-Delivery Process. Answer the following questions after viewing the video:

1) Which departments within the company are integrated within the Order-to-Delivery process?
2) Which steps are included in the Order-to-Delivery process?
3) What factors would you consider when deciding whether ERP is suitable or not for a small business?

1) Sales and Warehouse departments are integrated within the Order to Delivery process.

2) Background: Salesman received the Purchase order from clients, should take a look if there are any special request such as "Same Day Delivery".

Here are the steps included in the Order-to-Delivery process:
a) Check up with the inventory data to confirm stock status (make sure the goods are in stock.) Otherwise, need to arrange shipment.
b) Create a sales order.
c) Warehouse will receive the order at the meantime.
d) Warehouse should double check the stock status and print out the pick up slips and delivery notes if there are no problems.
e) If goods are going to delivery, warehouse will closed the sales order status.
f) Salesman can send email to confirm clients the goods are delivered.
As this is a single system, all staffs can check the steps/ status (including delivery address) from sales to delivery in the system.

3) Please kindly find the following points that I would consider when deciding whether ERP is suitable to a small business or not.

a) Integrated single database

An integrated single database helps manage inventory in real time. The company is easier to control time management. Once the new information is entered by one process, it is also immediately available to other business processes. Suppose, for example, Sales and marketing, inventory manufacturing staff all see the same version of a sales order, as soon as it is entered into the system. As we need not to re-entry the data, less delay problems will be occur. And we no need to worry about the data missing by the human mistake.

b) User friendly

Before we changed into ERP system, we are using different kinds of way/ systems to run our business. Such as network of disparate systems and spread-sheets. So, the major object we would focus on is an easy to use and customize ERP system. Being transit from old systems to a new system, staffs need to pick up it as soon as they can. Furthermore, the entire department is going to have the same version of the system, a user friendly system can help staff to check up the details straightforwardly. It also pushes decision making down to lower level staff. Coordinators can help salesman to answer client’s questions as all the information are shown in the system. That's the one of my main consideration.

c) Stable and scalable system to expand the business
We can find that the SAP Business shown in the website, it application enables small businesses not only to streamline end-to-end operations, but also designed exclusively. For example, manages the order-to-pay cycle, including orders, receipts, and returns; automate the order to delivery process and creates material requirements planning scenarios. That is what businesses are looking for.
A new system reduces incompatible data by replacing traditional, disconnected information system. They standardize all the data and business processes. It adapts to changing business needs, efficient the business in a stable and affordable way. We've trebled in size without having to hire additional staff members. Thus, the business can be expanding.

d) Achieve profitable growth

ERP system has management application that helps businesses to run their entire business. And they instantly obtain complete information with which to respond more quickly to market needs, and accelerate profitable growth.
As there is a clients-server networking, it helps salesman to handle clients request more quickly. On the other hand, it improves operating performance. For instance, clients who had a long-term business with us may have a credit payment terms. We can notice this when we set up a sales order. Partners can provision a new customers by connect to a Web interface, and using self-service functions to transfer information to us directly only causes 20 minutes. Since the implementation, business runs more smoothly, and we can serve customers faster and better.

In my option, ERP is needed to produce financial statements that fit the different reporting standards required by each country, (That’s why it implied a standard sign in the marketing.) which is one of its plus points. If we get this scalable system, we can help us raise our efficiency levels substantially.

Re: Session 1- Assignment One Question

This week we talked about the role of information systems in a business (Slide 9 of Lecture 1).Think of a business or organization that you admire, then describe two examples of how that business is supported by information systems. For example, do they use it for operational excellence ? Or do they use it to create new products and services ?Looking forward to your posts !
--------------------------------------------
As we all know, internet is very convenient to do shopping nowadays. And here I wanted to share is Moov, one of the biggest online music store in hong kong.
((*Well, I think most of you knew about Moov more than me... :) ))

In my point of view, Moov is achieving operational excellence by information (music album)updating. It isn't only has Chinese market, meanwhile has the worldwide music too. People over there can find the most updated album, search or listen the songs that they would like, enjoy the exclusive interview, etc.
Moov have a lots of partner relate to, such as TVB, EEG and Warner Music to maintain the CD information is updated. Sometimes they hold the events together to attain customer intimacy and services.
For example, if you wanted the full version of the MV or songs, you need to sign up for as a user first. After you signed up, you may recevie a lots of promotion email by Moov. There are always have chance to get a free concert ticket to attain customer. They also offer some special MV for the member's only.

Moreover, it also support copmuter, mobile phone and the home telephone online system services to the Users. They have their own radio channel online too. Users can enjoy the music in any place as they wanted by these new developed services.

I think that is the reasons why Moov is so popular!!!!!
